KRISTINA RISKA (1960–) studied ceramic art under designer Kyllikki Salmenhaara at the University of Art and Design Helsinki from 1979 to 1984 and in 1986 she was offered a one-year position as a visiting artist at the Arabia factory. From 1988 to 1997 she also taught at the University of Art and Design, and in 1992 she became a so-called studio artist at the Arabia factory. At present, she is a member of the Arabia Art Department Society.
Already at the beginning of her career, Kristina Riska made gossamer-thin pottery with a restricted scale of greys resembled the restrained colours of birch trunks. Along with utility objects and vessels, she has made large, almost architectonic, mural reliefs, sculptures and installations in which the experience of the material and the play of light and shadow predominate.
Kristina Riska lives in Helsinki and works at Arabia Art Department. She is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC).
